    Searching for the best place to make a wine on a par with the select clientele of La Scala, his Beverly Hills restaurant, Jean Leon buys 150 hectares in Catalonia’s Penedès region.

    We replace local varieties with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay from prestigious French wineries. An unprecedented decision that surprises local winegrowers.

  • We build the winery in the style of an authentic Bordeaux château.
  • We plant the first Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the Vinya La Scala parcel, which gives us our flagship wine.

    We plant the first Chardonnay vines in the Vinya Gigi parcel.

  • We plant the first Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc vines in the Vinya Le Havre parcel.
  • 1971

    We release the debut vintage (1969) of our Cabernet Sauvignon, making us the first vintners in Spain to produce a wine from this variety.

  • 1973

    We release the first vintage (1971) of Vinya Gigi Chardonnay. The first barrel-fermented Chardonnay in Spain.

  • 1981

    The 1975 vintage of Vinya La Scala Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva is chosen for Ronald Reagan’s inaugural dinner at the White House. Our Vinya Gigi 1980 is also served.

  • 1987

    We switch to French oak to barrel age our wines. Previously we had used American oak.

  • 1991

    We plant the vines that will eventually produce our 3055 Chardonnay.

  • We plant the first Merlot vines in the Vinya Palau parcel.
  • 1993

    Wine magazine picks our Cabernet Sauvignon ’83 as one of the eight best wines in the world.

  • 1994

    Jean Leon is diagnosed with laryngeal cancer. He decides to sell the winery to the Torres family, entrusting them with his most cherished legacy to ensure the continuity of his namesake wines and their international prestige.

  • 1996

    Until this vintage, the coupage of our Gran Reserva (Vinya La Scala) and Reserva (Vinya Le Havre) wines was 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, with only the best harvests used for the Gran Reserva. This is the year that Vinya La Scala becomes a Cabernet Sauvignon varietal wine.

  • We release the first vintage (1995) of Vinya Palau Merlot.
  • We plant the vines that will eventually produce our 3055 Merlot·Petit Verdot.
  • 1997

    We release the first vintage (1996) of 3055 Chardonnay (known as Petit Chardonnay until 2012).

  • 2002

    We inaugurate our new Visitors Center, designed by renowned architect Domingo Triay and inspired in a 1950s California style as a tribute to Jean Leon’s best years in Hollywood. The space is seamlessly integrated into the landscape and immerses visitors in the exciting process of making our wines and in the story of Jean Leon.

  • We plant our first Petit Verdot vines, a variety that was not yet authorized at the time for any Penedès appellation of origin wine.
  • 2004

    Xavier Rubires joins the team as assistant enologist, working closely with Jaume Rovira, the winery’s original enologist.

  • 2006

    Enologist Jaume Rovira, who had been with Jean Leon from the start, retires, but continues to share his knowledge and experience of the winery’s daily workings.

  • 2007

    We make an important investment in a new grape reception area that allows us to transport the grapes without resorting to wine pumps.

  • 2008

    Our vineyards make the switch to organic farming.

  • 2010

    Mireia Torres Maczassek, an enologist and part of Familia Torres’s fifth generation, comes on board as the winery’s General Manager.

  • 2011

    We launched the first (2010) of 3055 Merlot · Petit Verdot (until 2012 known as ‘Petit Merlot’)

  • 2012

    As of this vintage, all of our wines are labeled certified organic.

  • Coinciding with the winery’s 50th anniversary (1963–2013), we completely restyle our corporate image and restructure our wine portfolio. After all, “many wines have a story to tell, but very few tell one as incredible as the story of Jean Leon.”

  • We release the Special 50th Anniversary Edition, celebrating half a century of the winery’s history. A 2007 vintage blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot produced in a limited edition of 1963 bottles to honor the year the winery was founded.
  • 2013

    We become the first winery in Penedès and the second in Catalonia to obtain Single Vineyard Wine certification, specifically for four of our wines: Vinya La Scala Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva, Vinya Le Havre Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva, Vinya Palau Merlot and Vinya Gigi Chardonnay.

  • We release the first vintage (2012) of our 3055 Rosé, a Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon blend.
  • 2014

    In response to consumer demand in the rosé category, we replace the blend of our 3055 Rosé with Pinot Noir. The result is a pale, fresh and fruity rosé. At the time it was one of the few Pinot Noir varietals produced in Spain.

  • 2015

    We take the winery online and build our presence on leading social media platforms. Our goal is to communicate directly with our end consumers through lively, informative and value-added content about the Jean Leon winery, the wine world, and other topics closely linked to our brand positioning and values.

  • We release a screw-cap version of our 3055 range exclusively for the export market.

  • 2016

    We release X-15: a fresh elegant Xarel·lo made from 25 to 30-year-old vines grown in Alt Penedès. It is the first wine in our new EXPERIMENTAL WINE range. A selection of singular wines produced as very limited editions that celebrate Jean Leon at his most intuitive, experimental and determined.

  • 2017

    We launch the second wine in the EXPERIMENTAL WINE range. This time it is a red, an old vine Cabernet Franc varietal, produced in a limited edition of only 2,018 bottles.

  • 2018

    We’ve launched the third wine in the EXPERIMENTAL WINE range. This is a red wine made from the Sumoll variety that represents the union of the varietal origins of the Penedès, the homeland of Jean Leon and the origin of the ancestral Sumoll, of which only 2,182 bottles have been produced.
