Welcome PV-20!

PV-20

Excited and excited, we present PV-20, an organic petit verdot monovarietal from the 2020 vintage, which becomes the sixth experimental wine and one of the few Catalan wines of this variety.

Only 2,523 bottles and a single vintage have been produced, following the philosophy of this ephemeral and artisan range of wines with which our winemakers Mireia Torres and Roser Catasús experiment to show the uniqueness and personality of the different varieties.

The Experimental Wines range is an exclusive range of artisan wines of very limited production that pay tribute to the most intuitive, experimental and determined version of Jean Leon. These wines seek uniqueness and unique personality through microvinification or varieties.

About the Petit Verdot variety

Jean Leon PV-20 shows the full potential of the petit verdot variety in the Penedès, where it has adapted especially well. It is a minority red variety originating from the Bordeaux area, in France, which owes its name to its small and compact bunch and its dark coloured grape with greenish tones due to late ripening. It is resistant to diseases such as mildew and matures well in hot climates, making it very interesting in the current climate context.

According to Mireia Torres, director of Jean Leon: “the petit verdot is a variety for which we are clearly betting, for its ability to adapt to climate change, in addition to its oenological interest”.

Elaboration

To produce PV-20, a young vineyard with clones of French and Italian origin has been selected, of 4 hectares located in the southern part of the estate, where the soil is clayey-calcareous with fine-grained silt and shale concretions. Regarding the vintage, 2020 was a year with abundant rainfall during the spring but very dry during the summer and normal temperatures.

The wine undergoes alcoholic fermentation in a conical cement tank and rests for 6 months in 2,000-liter French oak casks. The result is a red of extreme finesse, expressive and complex. On the nose, it shows aromas of ripe black fruits and toasted and spicy notes. On the palate, it has a very voluptuous and fresh attack, which gives way to ripe tannins that give it great breadth and final length.

After experimenting with the autochthonous varieties Xarello, Sumoll and Malvasía from Sitges, and with the French varieties Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc, we look back at France, the country that inspired Jean Leon when he founded the winery in 1963.

Do not miss the opportunity to taste this exclusive wine. Production is limited!
