The Vinari Awards are the benchmark competition for Catalan wines, which this year has celebrated its ninth edition. In this contest, the wines compete in twelve categories, defined according to style and aging. The jury is made up of sixty professionals from the world of wine who taste blindly. The wines with the best scores in the initial phase are evaluated again, also blind, to choose the winners.
Our Jean Leon winery has won three medals in the Vinari 2021 Awards, with the estate wines Vinya Palau Merlot 2015, Vinya Le Havre Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2015 and with the young rosé wine 3055 Rosé 2020, all of them organic.
The winning wines Vinari Awards
Jean Leon Vinya Palau Merlot 2015 has achieved the Gold medal in the category of red wines for aging. This monovarietal merlot wine comes from a 10-hectare vineyard planted in 1991 on clay-calcareous soil and called Palau in homage to Santander, the city where Jean Leon was born (who was in fact baptized as Ceferino Carrión ). After 12 months of aging in 225-liter French oak barrels and a minimum of 6 more months in the bottle, the wine is fresh and elegant, with notes of plum, ripe black fruit and balsamic touches on a toasted background.
In this same category, Jean Leon Vinya Le Havre Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2015 has won the Silver medal. Vinya Le Havre, which refers to the French port from where Jean Leon embarked in pursuit of the American dream, was planted in 1968 and occupies an area of 16 hectares of clay-calcareous soils. It is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, which is aged for a minimum of 12 months in 225-liter French and American oak barrels and remains in the bottle for at least 2 years. The result is a very lively and full-bodied wine, dominated by notes of pepper and ripe red fruit.
Finally, the young Jean Leon 3055 Rosé 2020 has also achieved a Silver medal in the category of young rosé wines. Made entirely with Pinot Noir, it is an aromatic wine, with notes reminiscent of white and citrus fruits such as strawberries, on a background of red fruit. It stands out for its marked acidity, which gives it a feeling of persistent freshness.
We are very proud to have achieved this recognition since they show the effort of a great team and reflect the quality of our wines. Don’t waste your time and taste our Vinari award-winning wines!
