CB-19, an homage to France, Jean Leon’s inspiration

CB-19, or, in other words, Chenin Blanc 2019. This is the fifth wine in the collection of limited-edition single-variety wines, made from a very delicate white variety that’s relatively rare in Catalonia, making it one of the few 100% Chenin Blancs made in the whole of Spain.

We started with indigenous varieties such as  Xarel·lo,  Sumoll, and Malvasia de Sitges. We also experimented with the French variety Cabernet Franc, and now, once again, we’re making a wine using a variety that originated in France as an homage to the country that Jean Leon admired so much and that was his source of inspiration for founding the winery in the early 1960s. The wine is certified organic and, like the other experimental wines, production is very limited: There are only 3,164 bottles for this edition in particular.

The grapes are picked by hand and the wine is made as delicately as possible to maintain the expression of the variety. After completing the alcoholic fermentation, the wine rests for four months on fine lees in stainless steel tanks. The result is an elegant wine with aromas of flowers and green fruit on the nose and more citrus notes on the palate, with a prominent acidity that results in a very dynamic evolution in the glass. It’s a wine that goes very well with rice dishes, ceviche, sushi, and vegetable and pasta dishes, while it’s also great for enjoying on its own.

A limited, artisanal range that’s been going for 5 years

CB-19 is part of an exclusive range of artisanal wines with very limited production that seek to show off the uniqueness and personality of each variety. It’s the very personal project of Mireia Torres, director of Jean Leon, and the winemaker Roser Catasús. The range was launched in 2015 with a Xarel·lo, which was also made the following year. After X-15 and X-16, it was time for red wines with the Cabernet Franc CF-15 and the Sumoll SM-16. Last year came the turn of a wine made from Malvasia de Sitges, MS-18.
