August Rosell illustrates the vintage 2016 of Vinya La Scala Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva

August Rosell illustrates the vintage 2016 of Vinya La Scala Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva

The label of the new vintage of our Jean Leon Vinya La Scala Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva has a new protagonist: “La primera vinya” an oil painting on canvas by August Rosell.

As you know, the label of this wine is exceptional because each vintage pays tribute to a renowned artist. On this occasion, the main character is August Rosell, an artist who began his painting studies at the Llotja de Barcelona, and continued at the Massana School and the Faculty of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi in Barcelona.

His presence in the Penedès has marked a whole new style, and has even created a school, as he taught painting at the School of Arts and Crafts of the Penedès. With an exhibition at the Sala Almirall in Barcelona in 1974, he began his artistic career during which he has exhibited in Spain and abroad. His work is included in the “Living Encyclopedia of Catalan Painting and Sculpture”.

August Rosell is defined throughout more than 40 years of artistic career as one of the most emblematic painters of Penedès. The landscape of the area in all its complexity is a fundamental part of his work. His trajectory evolves towards a more open expression, without a concrete method or project.

A painting that evolves from figurativism, towards a more spontaneous expression, without method or project as the artist explains. His brushstrokes create lines, stains and spaces of light and shadow in his surroundings. The painter captures through color, technical mastery and the vibration of his stroke, the reality interpreted in a personal way.

A unique production

This year, 13,150 bottles of Jean Leon Vinya la Scala Cabernet Sauvingon Gran Reserva 2016 have been produced. The wine ages in French oak barrels for 24 months and in bottle for a minimum of 3 years.

The restaurant founded by Jean Leon in Beverly Hills that gives its name to this Gran Reserva was always a meeting point for artists and nonconformist souls.

August Rosell portrays, in this work that dresses the 2016 vineyard, the iconic La Scala vineyard with a sweeping gaze, showing the winery in the background along with the Penedès landscape. The colors and the vegetation full of life refer us to a late spring afternoon, under a sky of gray and pink tones. A tribute to the first vineyard planted by Jean Leon and Jaume Rovira in 1963.

The history of a great wine

Vinya La Scala Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva was the first wine made mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon in Spain: The first harvest was in 1969 and it was launched in 1971 exclusively for La Scala restaurant. The 1975 vintage was chosen for Ronald Reagan’s inauguration as President of the United States in 1981.

As a result of Jean Leon’s sensitivity to artistic expression, at the end of the 1970s, Vinya La Scala began to use art on the labels for some special vinatges, although it was not until the mid-1990s that it became a common practice to dress this wine.

Thus, great artists such as Josep Maria Guinovart in the 1996 vintage, Waltraud Maczassek in 2001, Josep Maria Subirachs in 2003, Josep Martí Bofarull in 2007, Modest Cuixart in 2009, Javier Mariscal in 2011, Josep Moscardó in 2012, Gloria Muñoz in 2013 and Josep Guinovart in 2015 have contributed to make each bottle a unique piece, reinforcing and paying tribute in each vineyard to the great link that Jean Leon has always had with the artistic world.
