Artist Josep Moscardó illustrates the new Vinya La Scala label

We were waiting for this moment. This is our most prized and iconic wine. Finally, a new Vinya La Scala Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon vintage is here. The year 2012. An exceptional harvest. After all, being exceptional is a prerequisite for making Vinya La Scala. If the vintage isn’t excellent, the wine isn’t made.

As you know, the label for this wine is special, because it always pays tribute to a renowned artist. This time the honor falls to the post-modernist painter Josep Moscardó, whose piece recalls the time when Jean Leon and his family lived in Barcelona. The Barcelonan artist captures a moment of mundane city life in Park Güell, an iconic Barcelona scene. Despite its vivid use of color, the piece is imbued with a sense of nostalgia. There is a predominance of ochre and earth tones, steely shades of violet, and blues that accentuate the Mediterranean Sea. Moscardó wants to capture the poetry of everyday life and in doing so has transformed this new vintage into a collection-worthy work of art.

The wine comes in an elegant wooden case which also features Moscardó’s work, highlighting the wine’s extraordinary character and the artist’s cityscape.

An exclusive production

Only 6,043 bottles of Jean Leon Vinya La Scala Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva were produced. The wine ages in French and American oak for 24 months and is then bottle aged for at least 3 years. The 2012 vintage saw a very dry vegetative cycle and a small amount of rain in August, which allowed for proper maturation.

As you know, the 1969 vintage was the first Spanish wine made predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon, and the 1975 vintage was chosen for Ronald Reagan’s official inaugural dinner when he became president of the United States in 1981. Since 1979, every new vintage has featured the work of a celebrated artist, including Josep Maria Guinovart (1996), Waltraud Maczassek (2001), Josep Mª Subirachs (2003), Josep Martí Bofarull (2007), Modest Cuixart (2009), and Javier Mariscal (2011).

If you want to be among the first to own and savor this exceptional new vintage, you can now find it at our online shop or at specialized stores.
