Vintage classifications of Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva wines
(based on tasting dated 11 March 2002)

BLOCK 1    The early Jean Leon vintages were subject to strong rains and intense heat, therefore they developed a softer colour.  
1969 Very Good This is the first Cabernet Sauvignon produced at Jean Leon from the vines planted in 1963. It underwent non-cask malolactic fermentation.  
1970 Good   Non-cask malolactic fermentation carried out, retains a good colour, with rather dry tannins.
1971 Very Good   Balsamic notes combined with hints of forest undergrowth (rosemary, thyme, etc.) Laurel, etc.
1972 Good   Evolved colour, some reduction notes, rather flat.
BLOCK 2   The key characteristic of these wines is their surprising colour and excellent state of conservation. A clear exponent of the Winery’s wines for laying down.  
1973 Very Good    Good colour, varietal, with body, balanced, but still with potential.
1974 Very Good    Slightly evolved colour, good intensity on the nose, very round and complete.
1975 Excellent   Evolved colour. Surprisingly expressive on the nose. With similar notes to those of the 71, its prominent aromas being forest undergrowth and smoke, on the palate it is dense and expressive.
1976   The wine was not produced in this year owing to a strong hailstorm that destroyed the harvest.  
1977 Very Good   Continues to be in excellent condition, despite its age, elegant aroma and perfectly round and smooth following its long development.
1978 Excellent   Good colour, complex and intense with notes of game and jam.
1979 Excellent   Very good colour. It offers an intense aroma, and is prominent for its great structure and powerful palate.
BLOCK 3      
1980 Very Good   Developed colour. Fine tannins, balsamic notes, intense with good tannic structure.
1981 Very Good   Intense colour. On the nose, clear notes of coffee, toffee and toast with an excellent finish.
1982 Very Good   Still has a good colour, intense with fruit and toast. Very well balanced.
1983 Excellent   Evolved colour. Balsamic notes of eucalyptus. Oak, conserving the fruit. On the palate, it is complex and meaty.
1984 Good   On the nose, prominent charred notes of ashes and hints of raisiny grape.
1985 Very Good   Dark colour. Intense, well combined, meaty and complex.
1986 Very Good   Good colour, aromas of cedar wood.
1987 Excellent   Balsamic notes of eucalyptus. Outstanding oak and good tannins.
1988 Excellent   Excellent colour. With great body. Notes of liquorice, plum.
1989 Very Good   Good colour, slightly rough tannins, again prominent aromas of forest shrubs and notes of jam.
1990 Excellent   Good colour, aromas of cedar wood, jam, oily and well-structured.
1991 Excellent   Very similar to the 90 vintage, with prominent aromas of oak and jam.
1992 Fair   Evolved colour, rounded.
1993 Good   Good colour. On the nose, it is delicate and perfumed, very well-balanced.
1994 Excellent   Soft, round tannins, varietal, with body and volume. Long aftertaste.
1995 Very Good   Good colour, intense, long, with fruit. Rounded and balanced.
BLOCK 4   From 1996 onwards, an evolution of the wines towards greater expressivity from the Terroir can be noted, with very marked spicy notes as well as more expressive fruit and more delicate oak. Gradual incorporation of New French oak.  
1996 Very Good Use of American oak for ageing. Prominent notes of coconut, again dry tannins, forest shrubs.
1997 Very Good From this year onwards, French oak started to be used, the proportion increasing until the year 2000. Round, jammy with intense fruit.
1998 Excellent   The ripeness of the fruit can be clearly perceived. Very well structured and with volume.
1999 Very Good   The oak is rather more intense in this vintage. With body and density, prominent notes of fruit and spices.
2000 Excellent 100% French Oak Intense colour. Well-structured and complex. Excellent concentration, cherries and raisins. Prominent notes of chocolate, toffee and toasty oak. Intense, jammy fruit.
